Health and Homeless Project
Health & Homeless project

NI Chest Heart & Stroke (NICHS) works to prevent and alleviate suffering from chest, heart and stroke illnesses across the population. Homeless people are more vulnerable to these conditions, particularly due to their transient living as they are not often registered with a GP.
NICHS' Health and Homeless programme, Energise, is an outreach service to people living in hostels and assisted living accommodation.
We offer a range of healthcare services, provided by health professionals and other specialists, to raise awareness of healthy living and ultimately prevent cardiovascular and respiratory illness.
We organise health fairs at homeless hostels and drop-in centres where residents can have access to nurses, podiatrists and dentists for medical advice and signposting to other medical services.
The programme also provides dietary advice, cooking skills training, smoking cessation and employment signposting.
Other services include:
- Aromatherapy
- Massage
- Reflexology
- Personal grooming and makeovers
- Arts and crafts
- Gardening
Services can be delivered as one-off events or as tailored programmes. NICHS Energise coordinator develops specific sessions with each of the groups with the assistance of internal support staff at each location.
All of the personnel engaged by the programme in the delivery of services are fully trained in their field and have a vast amount of experience of working in the area of homelessness.

The Health and Homeless Project is fully funded by the Health and Social Care Board (previously funded by EHSSB).
