Respiratory Research
Respiratory Research
NICHS funds vital research by local medical researchers and associated health professionals into a range of respiratory conditions to improve prevention and clinical services for patients.
Some examples:
Self management of COPD
NICHS part funded a study into developing a disease and medicine management programme for patients suffering with COPD. Results from the study demonstrated that COPD patients had a poor understanding of their lung disease and insufficient knowledge regarding their medications. A self management programme was developed and led by pharmacists at the Mater hospital, involving a group of 173 COPD patients over a 12 month period. The study helped to reduce hospital admissions by 55% and emergency visits by 51%.
Effect of increased fruit and vegetable intake on airway inflammation
COPD is characterised by airway inflammation and oxidative stress. Studies indicate that a diet low in antioxidants, e.g. fruit and vegetables is associated with decreased lung function and increased risk of COPD. This study will investigate this trend and produce guidelines on diet for patients with COPD. The study is due to finish in August 2009.
