Health Committee Hears Stroke Concerns
Stroke charities have told the...
Stroke
A stroke is what happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off - for long enough to cause vital brain tissue to die.
Blood carries essential nutrients and oxygen to the brain. Without a blood supply, brain cells can be damaged or destroyed within a very short space of time and won't be able to do their job.
Unlike other cells in the body, once brain cells have died they cannot regrow
The brain is the most complex organ in the body & controls absolutely everything your
body does
Damage to the brain can affect:
Body functions - e.g. if a stroke damages the part of the brain that controls how limbs move, limb movement will be affected.
Mental processes - the brain also controls how we think, learn, feel and communicate. e.g. ability to speak might be affected, emotions & personality can also be affected
A stroke is sudden and the effects on the body are immediate
