The Young Stroke Project of Northern Ireland Chest Heart Stroke has won a hat-trick of horse dressage awards at the Riding for Disabled Association's Regional Dressage Competition. The Young Stroke Project's horse-riding group helps develop confidence and independence in stroke survivors.

At an event today (1 July) to recognise the 20 volunteers and supporters of the Young Stroke Project's horse riding group, Brenda Young, who survived a stroke last year and has only been riding for 10 months, received her Trophy for the 'Best Senior Outdoors in Dressage'. On receiving the Trophy Brenda Young said: "The horse riding has been a great experience for me, helping with my balance and in building my confidence. I could not believe I won the trophy, my first competition and my first prize. "

Awards were also given to June Close who won a First in her dressage class and Donna Higham who won Second in her dressage class.

NICHS' Young Stroke Project aims to address physical, emotional and social needs of young stroke survivors - who range in ages up to 65-years-old. The Project offers a range of activities including a horse riding group which aids the rehabilitation of young stroke clients as the horses help to improve balance and co-ordination, muscular strength, confidence and greatly improve social and emotional well-being.
