The NI Chest Heart & Stroke has welcomed with delight the additional funding which will eventually mean £35m extra every year in Northern Ireland to tackle the appalling waiting lists here.

Andrew Dougal, Chief Executive of NICHS said, “The situation has become dire over the last 5 years with the number waiting for more than 3 months almost doubled from 60,000 to 118,000.

It is essential that this extra money is used effectively.

Effective monitoring is critical if these funds are to be used wisely. It is imperative that the Department of Health and Health Trusts publish each week on websites the achievements which are being made in relation to reducing waiting lists. The tax payer is entitled to the information to see how each hospital is fairing in terms of serving its community.”
