Smokefree Legislation Statement
Friday 21 October 2005
We were delighted to be present at the Waterfront Hall on Monday 17th October to hear Minister Shaun Woodward make his historic announcement.
We were delighted to be present at the Waterfront Hall on Monday 17th October to hear Minister Shaun Woodward make his historic announcement.
The Minister made the decision that smoking is to be controlled in all workplaces and enclosed public spaces throughout Northern Ireland.
He came to his decision following sustained lobbying by NICHSA, which worked in conjunction with the Health Promotion Agency and other members of Smokefree Northern Ireland (www.smokefreenorthernireland.com). The Ulster Cancer Foundation is to be commended for its pioneering leadership on this issue.
We believe that this forthcoming legislation will provide a solid foundation on which to build a healthier future for all.
Many thanks must go to Kathleen Aylward and Ronnie Robinson of Belfast City Hospital Chest Help group, who represented us so bravely. Kathleen and Ronnie were invited to have tea with the Minister after his groundbreaking speech and before the press conference.
