Every year more than 100,000 people throughout the United Kingdom suffer a first stroke and here in Northern Ireland this number is more than 3,000. Charity calls for tobacco tax increase and for tough measures on smuggling

The NI Chest, Heart and Stroke Association has urged Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, to increase tobacco tax above and beyond inflation. This policy of increasing tobacco tax has been very successful. The number of 15 year olds smoking has reduced by almost 25% in the period between 1996 and 1999. more »
