The Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke Association has welcomed the finding by researchers in a global study that it is possible to reverse the fatty deposits which build up in the arteries and cause heart attacks and strokes.

“This is a spectacular discovery and will be a major weapon in the battle against the ravages of heart disease,” said Andrew Dougal Chief Executive of NICHSA.

“It is pleasing that the greatest reductions in fatty deposits were achieved in those with the most severe disease.

Prior to now, it was felt that these drugs merely arrested the development of fatty plaques in the arteries. It is hoped that with the reduction in fatty deposits, the number of heart attacks and strokes will greatly decrease.

Northern Ireland has a very poor record in terms of heart and stroke illnesses with well over 40% of deaths caused by these diseases of the circulation.”
