Red Letter Day For Health
Tuesday 28 June 2005
This is the defining day for the health of the people of Northern Ireland, according to the Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke Association.
This is the defining day for the health of the people of Northern Ireland, according to the Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke Association.
Its Chief Executive, Andrew Dougal, welcomed the Minister’s statement saying, “A clear and resounding message has been given to our new Health Minister to ensure that the people here are able to live and to work in smoke-free environments.
The English fudge, where smoking is permitted in some public bars and not in others, has no appeal for the Ulster public. Such a policy will drive food off the menu in those pubs in deprived areas and so cause even more health problems for the marginalised in our society.”
The fudge, if implemented, will become a farce.
91% in favour of smoke-free environments has empowered our new Health Minister to act on behalf of the people.
On this issue, the people of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are determined that our politicians will act to protect public health and to advance the common good.
Hopefully England will follow suit, albeit belatedly.”
