LYNDA'S CAUSEWAY CHALLENGE FOR NI CHEST HEART AND STROKE
Wednesday 7 April 2010
TV's Lynda Bryans has donned her walking boots to help top health charity, NI Chest Heart and Stroke launch its Causeway Challenge and four-mile family fun walk on Saturday 22nd May at the Giant's Causeway. Lynda is appealing for people to put their best foot forward and embark on the 11 mile walking challenge to raise funds for people in Northern Ireland with chest, heart and stroke illnesses.
Vanessa Elder, Fundraising Manager for NI Chest Heart and Stroke said: "The Causeway Challenge takes in some of Northern Ireland's most scenic countryside around the Giant's Causeway and is open to people of all abilities to raise funds and improve their own fitness. NI Chest, Heart and Stroke is spending half a million pounds this year on high quality research in local hospitals and universities. We also provides a network of support groups across Northern Ireland for people affected by chest, heart and stroke illnesses."
"But that's you can do to challenge your energy," says Vanessa Elder "There are many marathons and events all around the world, and if people are planning trips to complete any of them, they could use the opportunity to help us beat chest, heart and stroke illnesses at the same time."
One person in the charity has already set an example. Its Health Promotion
Co-ordinator Maureen McCourt has completed more than 50 marathons over the years.
"But challenging your energy doesn't have to involve pounding the streets for 26 miles," says Vanessa. " There are many smaller and less strenuous events that people can take part in - and you can even do it on your own. We have signposted Highway to Health routes in nearly every council area in Northern Ireland. Why not set your own pace and distance, and get friends and family to sponsor your efforts? We would, of course, be delighted to see wheelchair users taking up the challenge as well."
