A local health charity has condemned food manufacturers for attempting to dash the possibility of an agreed and uniform system of food labelling. The Food Standards Agency, with the support of many voluntary and public bodies concerned about health, were about to put in place an easily understood system of food labelling.

Andrew Dougal, Chief Executive of NI Chest Heart & Stroke (NICHS) says, “These large companies have thrown a spanner into the works. Years of earnest endeavour to help inform the public on food choices have been put at risk. It will come as no surprise that the companies concerned are major culprits in selling products high in salt, fat or sugar.”

“Both Government and the Food Standards Agency will now appreciate the devious and duplicitous tactics which the food industry uses to avoid its customers making informed choices on a healthy diet.”

“Heart and stroke illnesses account for 4 out of every 10 deaths each year in Northern Ireland. Poor nutrition is also a culprit in some cancers.”

“These companies are no friend to the public health.”
