The NI Chest Heart & Stroke Association has stated that members of the public should not be concerned about the slowness of supply of flu vaccine. The Association is confident that over the next number of weeks those who require the flu vaccination will receive it.

Andrew Dougal, Chief Executive of NICHSA said, β€œIt is appropriate that those at highest risk should get the limited number of vaccines currently available. It is right that young children with chest, heart, kidney or liver problems along with individuals over 75 years of age with similar problems should be given priority. I am sure the rest of us will be happy to wait so that these very high risk groups are given priority.”

Mr Dougal also urged that General Practices and Community Pharmacies should review their purchasing procedures. It is appropriate to question the wisdom of placing a very high proportion of the total order with a single firm.

Consideration should be given to asking the Government Purchasing & Procurement Agency to undertake this work in future years. In this way it will be possible to ensure best value and to spread the business over a number of competent suppliers.
