A leading medical charity in Northern Ireland has urged employers to seek ways of reducing work stress, which has been shown to increase greatly the risk of heart disease.

Research, undertaken in Finland and published in today’s (Friday) British Medical Journal, has shown that high job strain and an imbalance between effort and reward, doubles the risk of death from heart disease or stroke.

Andrew Dougal, Chief Executive of NICHSA said, “Employers and organisations like the CBI and the Institute of Directors should seek a guidance on ensuring a better balance between work on the one hand and life outside work on the other.” He asked that Personnel Managers should persuade their colleagues in other areas of management of the benefits of flexible employment policies. These benefits are not confined to health but extend to productivity and in the private sector to profitability.
